Reference is made to the editorial entitled “The S in PBS could stand for ‘soporific’” published in The Malta Independent of Wednesday 8th January 2014.

This editorial, in a nutshell, says that during periods such as the summer shutdown period and Christmas, PBS “tends to fill the news period with tame, light-weight, soporific, news items”.

It also implies that such news stories broadcast by PBS are aimed at camouflaging reality and thereby setting the mindset of the country as a whole.

With all due respect, this claim could not be further than the truth.

The editor should know that in past consecutive Christmas periods, our political parties actually agreed to cease political activities for the whole Christmas recess.

This meant that during such periods PBS continued to cover news stories as they occurred.

This is exactly what PBS did this Christmas. The only difference is that in past Christmases, The Malta Independent chose not to comment about this alleged ‘camouflage’.
