Actually, it is very easy to follow the logic behind Simon Busuttil’s and his party’s destructive opposition to the revamped Individual Investor Programme (IIP). They are more than convinced that the IIP could generate a revenue flow of many hundreds of millions of euros, even topping €1 billion. So much so that they never say that the IIP will end up as a failure in financial terms! So once they are convinced of its financial success, this would mean a very big inflow of investment into the economy.
Such a big inflow of money in Malta’s economy would mean that the PL government would have much more money to invest in various sectors such as education, health, social housing, sports facilities and so on.
This great boost to the various sectors of the economy will inevitably be felt by the vast majority of the people, including those who today are leaving no stone unturned in their desperate efforts to try and “ditch” this programme!
Once the people start experiencing the feel-good factor of the IIP, Simon Busuttil and Friends believe that the people will thus feel grateful to the government which has made this possible. And the best and only way to show their gratitude is by voting for the same party which gave them that government – the PL! And that would mean that the PL would remain in office, which also means that the PN will have to remain much longer on the Opposition benches!
This is the real reason behind the PN’s “No” to the IIP and not Malta’s interest! As Sherlock Holmes would have said: “Elementary, my dear Watson!"
