I do not know, as I write, what the Nationalist Party’s reaction to Marie Louise Coleiro Preca’s intended nomination as President of Malta will be, and I would not be surprised if the PN parliamentary group comes out against the nomination – with the daunting, historic minority the PN has in parliament, they, understandably, need to make the most noise in whatever they do, even if only to raise their very own morale. But I would like to point out what no one seems to be aware of, or that which everyone who is aware of it, seems bent on keeping under wraps, as they did when writing about the late Labour Party stalwart Wistin Abela when he passed away not so very long ago. It was the 1987 election (or was it 1981? – I do not know for sure, I am writing from memory). The late Mr Abela, and Ms Coleiro Preca, were manhandled by their own (then) unruly, well known supporters, for standing up, in notorious Zejtun, for the right of Nationalist voters to cast the ballot paper for their party. These Labour supporters were physically doing their violent best to prevent known Nationalist Party (opposition) supporters from voting. But Ms Coleiro Preca, then Labour Party general secretary, and the late Mr Abela, would have none of it. They stood up against their own party’s then bullies’ tactics, and were manhandled by these supporters for their trouble. You see, it was not all pitch dark under the Labour ‘regime’, though there was so much that was frighteningly menacing. With Ms Coleiro Preca as President, Malta will have another no-nonsense head of state. I wish her all the very best in her office. Roger Mifsud, Rabat
