Constable investigated over 'political' abuse of power

Malta Independent Friday, 14 March 2014, 09:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Police Internal Affairs Board are investigating allegations that a constable stationed at the Rabat Police Station is making claims that he can do as he pleases because “his government is in power”.

It is understood that the investigation is focusing on claims that the officer in question has been heard bragging that he wants to “get rid of” all police officers that support the PN stationed in Rabat.

They are also investigating claims that the same constable brags that he has the Police Commissioner’s ear and that he can do as he pleases because “his government is in power”.

Nationalist MP Jason Azzopardi confronted Internal Affairs Minister Manwel Mallia about the issue and asked him whether he believed the allegations – if true – can create division within the Corps.

Dr Mallia said that the allegations had been passed on to the Police’s Internal Affairs Department for investigation. He condemned such acts, if they are found to have taken place, and said that the constable would face disciplinary proceedings.
