The Maltese waterpolo team has won its fourth match on the trot in the Commonwealth Games being played in Glasgow. England and Canada have also won all their matches so far.

On Tuesday, Malta beat South Africa 9-8 in a tight encounter.

Previously, victories had been obtained against New Zealand 17-9, Scotland 18-7, and Singapore 18-8.

The South Africans had had a mixed start to the Championship, with one win, one draw and one loss and were hoping to cause an upset in front of a big support.

And it was them who started the better, taking an early two goal lead. They were playing really well, with high tempo, matching the Maltese for strength across the pool.

The Maltese finally found their rhythm and clawed themselves back into the claim thanks to powerful shots from Michele Stellini and Mark Meli.

The game was evenly poised at 5-5 at half-time, setting it up for a tense second half.

Stellini continued to impress seeming to score with every one of his efforts.

Bardenhorst and Wingate-Pearce kept the South Africans in touch but Stellini and his side led 9-7 with four minutes left in the final quarter.

The South Africans pushed to keep the Maltese in their own half, and finally reduced the deficit to one thanks to a great goal from Lood Rabie.

They then had one minute to find an equaliser and they nearly did, with 20 seconds to go the ball fell to Nic Mollyneux whose shot was wonderfully saved by Borg Cole.

So after four games, Malta still have a 100% record and look certain to be in contention at the end of the week.

Malta will play against Wales this evening.
