Wartime pillbox at Salina being pulled down

Malta Independent Thursday, 10 April 2014, 09:30 Last update: about 11 years ago

Work on enlarging the Coast Road is starting with the clearing of trees and also with the demolition of a wartime pillbox at Salina.

The pillbox was one of many which were hurriedly erected during the war when it was thought the Germans would invade Malta. Actually, the invasion never came and the pillbox may well not have been used at all.

There are many such pillboxes around the shores and heights of the North-East coast of Malta. Other examples can be found at Selmun near Fort Campbell and also on the road leading to Naxxar where two defensive pillboxes have been restored.

The works to enable the Coast Road to be safer (it is the road where most traffic accidents and deaths occur) with two lanes on each side and a centre strip was approved by Mepa under the previous government which also allowed the demolition of this pillbox which, it was said, does not have any architectural or historic value.
