Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil has again stated that his ambition for the MEPs election on 24 May is for the PN to win three seats, as up to now the PN had only won two seats in these elections.
The Leader of the Opposition is again trying to take the Mickey out of his own party supporters. I’ll explain why. Up to now, the quota for elections for the European Parliament was on just five seats. The election on 24 May will be the first election of the European Parliament when the quota will be based on six seats instead of five. Hence, the amount of votes needed by candidates to get elected this time is much less than the amount of votes needed in previous elections.
In fact, had the quota in the 2009 MEP elections been based on six seats instead of five, the PN would still have won three seats and not two, despite the fact that the PL had polled 35,000 more first preference votes than the PN! Simon knows this, but he believes that the vast majority of his party supporters do not know it, since this undeniable fact has never been reported in the PN media!
This is why the Leader of the Opposition is saying that his ambition is for the PN to win the third seat, because he knows that it is impossible for the PN not to win the third seat when the quota will be worked on six seats. Not a very overwhelming ambition, I must say!
