Animal killer did it to ‘feel better’

Malta Independent Wednesday, 30 April 2014, 16:35 Last update: about 12 years ago

The Mosta man who crucified domestic animals over a 30-month period had done so to feel better, to improve his morale, a court appointed expert said in court yesterday.

He had been experiencing a recurrence of old problems, in light of another case he had had, psychiatrist George Debono told Magistrate Carol Peralta.

The accused, Nicholas Grech, 37, is charged with animal cruelty by committing macabre acts. He is being held under preventive arrest, though the court had ordered him held at Mt Carmel Hospital.

Dr Debono testified that Grech was not taking medicine when he committed the offences.

Grech, an Enemalta engineer, is pleading not guilty to the charges, which also include violating graves, and vilifying the Catholic religion.

Inspectors Edmond Curmi and Joseph Busuttil are prosecuting, Dr Martin Fenech is defence counsel.

Fourteen animals were found dead and crucified between September, 2011 and last March. The court is to decide whether Grech can undergo a compilation of evidence.
