Malta Independent Sunday, 25 May 2014, 19:03 Last update: about 11 years ago

The MEP elections in Malta are part of a much larger set of elections taking place across the EU.

Currently, European Parliament projections see the European People’s Party take hold of the largest number of seats with 217, down from 273, closely followed by the Socialists and Democrats who are projected to take 199 seats, up from 196.

PN MEP’s, once elected, will form part of the EPP party and the PL MEP’s will join the S&D party. Together, these two parties are projected to hold 55.39% of the seats.

European polling stations will see 751 MEP’s elected from 28 countries, with 21 of these countries voting today. Only seven countries have already seen voters cast their ballot, Malta amongst them.

Until noon today, Italy saw only 16.7% of its population vote, While Malta saw a 34% turnout by 2pm yesterday.

Results from both UK and Malta are expected to begin pouring in later today, while results for the countries posting their ballots today are expected to see results tomorrow.

Certain polls leading up to the election in the UK show the UK Independence Party, an anti-EU political group, in the lead predicted to win a total of 27% in these elections, closely followed by Labour with 26% and Conservatives with 22%.
