‘Romanus  Living History’ are two days packed with everything Roman, from the famous tight field formations, skirmishing and cavalry action. ‘Romanus’ is being organised thanks to the collaboration between Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and Bank of Valletta.

The weekend of the 31st May and First June will see Fort Rinella in Kalkara transformed into a Roman Encampment with over 30 Roman re-enactors from Legio x Fretensis (Malta) and Anakron Living History.

The event was officially launched by Mario Farrugia, CEO of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and Michael Galea, Chief Officer at Bank of Valletta during a press conference held at Fort Rinella during the final preparations for the two-day festival.

‘With over 7 centuries of Roman occupation in Malta, it is indeed a pleasure to bring the Roman military and civil traditions back to life during this two day festival’ said Mr Farrugia. ‘Visitors will have the rare opportunity to see a horse drawn Roman Chariot in action as well military drill and Roman every day life thanks to the participation of Legio X Fretensis - Malta & Anakron Living History Groups.’

‘We take this opportunity to urge history lovers to become Friends of Wirt Artna through a small donation. Apart from free entrance to sites managed by Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna and at special events, regular mail-shots continue to create awareness about Malta’s rich cultural heritage, while helping the FWA to continue to manage more sites on the island’, concluded Mr Farrugia.

“As the main sponsor of Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna, BOV is delighted to support this innovative event focusing on an era in Maltese History that is generally overlooked,” said Mr. Galea. “Our support underlines the importance that the Bank gives towards the promotion of Malta’s cultural heritage – an area that is a key pillar of BOV’s Community Programme,” added Mr. Galea. “We congratulate FWA for coming up with this initiative that will provide a unique opportunity for Maltese and tourists alike to visit Fort Rinella and take a journey back to the time when Malta was under Roman occupation,” concluded Mr. Galea.

Bus no.3 from Valletta stops just outside Fort Rinella and free parking is available on site. Further information about the event can be found on the Fondazzjoni Wirt Artna website www.wirtartna.org
