The Seventy Fifth Anniversary of the Malta Self-Government was commemorated in the Presidential Palace during a ceremony during which nine persons, who were Members of Parliament on 7 June 1996, were conferred with the Medal.

This important event in the historical development of democracy in Malta materialised in 1921 with the inauguration of Parliament after the re-introduction of Self-Government to Malta during a meeting of the Senate and the Legislative Assembly under the provisions of the “Amery Milner” Constitution which was promulgated as a direct result of the 7 June 1919 events.

Those receiving the medal during the ceremony presided by the President of Malta were Dr Alfred Sant, Dr Lawrence Gonzi, Dr Louis Galea, Dr Tonio Borg, Mr John Dalli (in absentia), Dr.Michael Frendo, Mr Ninu Zammit, Dr Louis Deguara and Mr Noel Farrugia.
