Valletta leave Exiles at the bottom, Sliema take second place

Valletta leave Exiles stranded at the bottom of the standings

The Citizens managed to get the better of Exiles, in a bottom of the table clash. The first game between these two sides ended in a stalemate, but this time Valletta had a good start to the match, and although they faltered once, when Exiles drew level, Valletta were once more in front, and they stayed there till the rest of the encounter. Valletta rested Rainer Scerri, with Simon Cachia back in the side, and Diego Borg was in the Exiles line up once again.

The Citizens had a bright start, as they scored three times without any reply from Exiles, to set the pace of the game. Valletta were further in front, in the second session, but Exiles returned strongly, to net three times, with Valletta taking another double lead, till the interval, from the excellent Michael Spiteri Staines.

After the break Exiles were more resourceful, and they managed to make the score

6-6, only for teh Citizens to push forward once more, as they netted three further goals in a row. Both sides scored again, with Valletta going into the last quarter on a 10-7 advantage. Spiteri Staines increased Valletta’s lead, and although Exiles came back with a couple of goals, Valletta were still in control, and Djorde Filipovic sealed the Citizens’ victory, with Exiles getting a late goal, for a better scoreline.

Spiteri Staines ended with a poker of goals, for Valletta, as did David Pace Lupi for Exiles.

Sliema are now in sole second place

In the match for sole third position it was Sliema who bagged all three points of the match, as they beat San Giljan, for the second time this season, with the same scoreline. It was a match replete with man ups, as Sliema converted eight from twelve, and the Saints had a total of fifteen occasions, also netting eight times. Sliema fi8nished the match with four players, all out on fouls, Soler, Meli, Brownrigg and Attard, whilst San Giljan had Dowling and Bianchi also ending early.

The match began with Alex Radovic smashing a penalty throw against the crossbar for San Giljan. Sliema opened the scoring, but then suffered two San Giljan strikes, one opf them from another penalty, this time scored by Zelyko Kovacic, only for Antonio Petrovic to take Sliema to an even score. In the second period Sliema twice went into a double advantage, with the Saints pulling a goal back on the two occasions, but a Petrovic penaly had Sliema leading 6-4 at the interval.

After the break  another penalty by Kovacictook the Saints nearer, but Sliema held out, and then scored twice, to obtain a better advantage against the Saints, leading 8-5, going into the last quarter. The game took another turn, with San Giljan converting three man ups in succession, to draw level. Sliema werer agin ahead, only for teh Saints to tie the score yet again, always on man ups. It was left to the Sliema captain, John Soler, to obtain the winning goal, although there was ample time left for both sides to increase their score., but both of them missed their next man ups, with Sliema holding grimly on to their slight lead, as they became Neltunes’ main challengers, though they have a five point deficit to make up.

Both Sliema’s Petkovic, and San Giljan’s Kovacic, scored four goals for their side.

M’xlokk overtake Otters in second place

M’xlokk leapfrogged over the Gozitans in the table, with this victory, their firat in four games against Otters, although the last two were both drawn. After two early Mark fenech goals for M’xlokk Otters reacted well, to draw level till the end of the opening period. M’xlokk were in front once more, in the second session, but Otters were twice ahead, but at the interval M’xlokk obtained a leveller, from Aleandro Mifsud, at 6-6.

After teh break it was M’xlokk again, on a double advantage, with Otters profiting froma failed penalty throw, as M’xlokk’s Bence Fulope hit the upright. Otters were again on level terms, but Anthony Galea put M;xlokk in front. Otters lost Edward Andrei, shown a red card, and M’xlokk started the last period leading 9-8. The Gozitans were yet again on a even score, but then M;xlokk hit a bright patch, as they netted three times in a row, to make the issue safe. A late Ivan Vuksanovic penalty took Otters on double figures, but still on the losing side.

Mark Fenech and Aleandro Mifsud scored hat tricks for M’xlokk, with Vuksanovic netting four goals for Otters.
