Maltese sign language tutor training course

Tuesday, 14 October 2014, 14:39 Last update: about 13 years ago

To help develop the Maltese sign language curriculum and raise awareness of the needs of deaf and hard of hearing people in the Maltese Islands, the Deaf People Association (Malta) organised a short course for current and aspiring teachers of Maltese sign language (Lingwa tas-Sinjali Maltija - LSM).At present Maltese sign language courses are provided by just two Maltese sign language teachers. However, over the past two years, public demand to learn Maltese sign language has increased dramatically. The Deaf People Association also regularly receives requests from businesses, schools and individuals which prompted the Executive Committee to work with the University of Malta's Institute of Linguistics, current sign language teachers, the Foundation for the Development of Maltese Sign Language and the European Network of Sign Language Teachers (ENSLT) to organise this much-needed training. The course was held over four days with certificates of attendance. Deaf people who are fluent in LSM were invited to apply for the Tutor Training Course. The course was led by deaf trainers who are experts in their field, namely Dr Luigi Lerose (board member of ENSLT) and Clark Denmark from the International Institute for Sign Languages and Deaf Studies (iSLanDS), University of Central Lancashire, UK.The project will equip deaf and hard of hearing people with skills in LSM teaching and with the necessary skills to participate in the training of further Maltese sign language interpreters. The course was also an opportunity to promote teamwork within the deaf community and to increase the self-esteem and confidence of the participants. It is hoped that the project will strengthen links with foreign academic institutions and foster interest in the linguistics of LSM and help develop the existing curriculum. This project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of MSV Life along with the University of Malta's Institute of Linguistics, Prof. Marie Alexander, Rotary La Valette Malta and the Intercontinental Hotel St Julian's.
