Teatru Manoel is starting this season's new series of 'Wednesdays at the Manoel' with a fantastic evening of eclectic music ranging from classical to modern by The Gershwin Quartet and clarinettist Roman Kuperschmidt on 22 October 2014 at 8pm.The quartet is made up of violinists Michel Gershwin and Natalija Raithel, violist Juri Gilbo, and cellist Dmitrij Gornowskij. They have been performing as an ensemble since 1990. Their repertoire covers a variety of music genres including classical, modern, jazz and Latin American.The ensemble consists of representatives of the Russian instrumental school and prizewinners of various international music competitions. The name of the quartet comes from the exceptional first violinist Michel Gershwin, who received his international recognition in 1988 as grand prize winner of the international "David Oistrach Competition". After having held positions as concertmaster of the Orchestre de Opera National de Lyon and the Philharmonischen Orchesters der Oper Frankfurt, Gershwin has been concentrating on his solo engagements and as concertmaster of the "Gershwin Quartet". The quartet has performed throughout Europe, the USA, Russia, Brasil, Asia, Dubai, Lebanon and Israel. Clarinettist Roman Kuperschmidt is described by the press as a "Russian Gem". He played his first solo concert with the Russian State Philharmonic Orchestra of Kazan at the age of 12 and is one of the best known young talents of Russia. He studied at the Russian State Conservatory and at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Frankfurt. He was awarded the Grand Prix of the prestigious International Clarinet Competition Moscow in 1995. His special interest is modern music and Klezmer, which he cultivates with his Kuper Schmidt ensemble. He has performed as a soloist throughout Europe, the USA, Israel and Lebanon.
