ŻiguŻajg: a perfect introduction to art

Monday, 27 October 2014, 15:39 Last update: about 11 years ago

Children aged 5+ are in for a treat at this year’s ZiguZajg with three productions which provide a perfect introduction to art

From a production that creates poetry out of plastic bags to an award-winning show on the search for water and a retelling of a Grimms' classics in Maltese, ŻiguŻajg is out to wow both young and not-so-young this November. L'Apres-Midi d'Un Foehn Version 1 (Afternoon of a Foehn Version 1) is a show for children aged 5+ which creates poetry out of plastic bags. The project was dreamt up by Phia Menard. The production transforms a simple plastic bag into a charming graceful live character. Manipulated by the flow of air, the bags swirl and twirl, dancing to Claude Debussy's most famous work, the timeless Afternoon of a Faun, inspired by Mallarme's poem of the same name. In the project, the "foehn" refers to the notorious transalpine winds. Presented by La Compagnie Non Nova, this non-verbal performance received an Award at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013 in the "Physical / Visual Theatre" category. Îlo is another non-verbal theatre production suitable for children aged 5+. In a faraway desert, a mysterious man lends a helping hand to a thirsty plant. Thus starts a surprising adventure where man and plant set on a quest for water. Will acrobatic figures, dance steps and games of cat and mouse enable them to find the precious liquid? The production, presented by Compagnie ChaliWaté, has won the Prix de la Province de Liège and the Prix Kiwanis aux Rencontres de Théâtre Jeune Public de Huy (Belgique). And for those children aged 5+ who enjoy taking part in a performance, the Drama Unit will be presenting Rondinella, an adaptation in Maltese of Grimm's fairy tale The Fisherman and His Wife. Children will be involved throughout the performance, which tells the story of a poor fisherman who finds a magic fish and lets it go. When his wife hears the story, she demands that her husband ask the magic fish to grant a wish. At first the fisherman refuses but, not wanting to disappoint his wife, he uses his wishes to try and bring her happiness. The fish grants the man's wish. But the greedy wife asks for more! Running from 17-23 November, this year's ŻiguŻajg will feature an amazing 28 productions, including 12 foreign shows from seven different countries. Artists from Spain, France, Germany, Italy and the Netherlands among others will team up with some of the best Maltese artists to create the only festival in Malta where children and young people are truly centre stage.
