Tuesday, 4 November 2014, 15:42 Last update: about 12 years ago

Two public lectures will be held in the coming days, forming part of the current programme on Politics and the Common Good - The Call to Public Lifewhich is being co-organised by the Pastoral Formation Institute and Fondazione Centesimus Annus Malta.  The Programme is intended to inform and support those wishing to play a more active role in public life.

The first lecture is entitled Faith and Politics, and will be delivered by Dr Adrian Pabst, PhD (Cantab), Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Kent, U.K.  on Friday 7 November from  17.30 to 18.30 hours at the Catholic Institute.

Dr Pabst holds a PhD in political thought and philosophy of religion from Cambridge University. He has published widely at the interface of political theory, political economy and international relations, and has a strong interest in the role of ethics and religion in politics.  Dr Pabst is currently undertaking research on post-liberal politics, which combines a critique of economic and social liberalism with alternatives that emphasise reciprocity, mutuality and the common good.  Over the next decade, he will be working on his book Europe's Historical Hope, blending a critique of the dominant models of European integration with alternatives that accentuate shared cultural and social ties.  Dr Pabst is also a Fellow of the Centre of Theology and Philosophy, and a trustee of the non-partisan think-tank ResPublica.

The second public lecture is entitled  Politics and the Common Good  and is in fact the concluding lecture in the programme.  It will be delivered by Baron Maurice Glasman (PhD), Senior Lecturer in Political Theory at London's Metropolitan University and Director of its Faith and Citizenship Programme.  It will be held on Saturday 15 November from 09.30 to 10.30 hours at the Catholic Institute

Baron Glasman is an English academic, social thinker and Labour life peer in the House of Lords.   He received his Ph.D. from the European University Institute in Florence and his thesis is focused on the German social market economy.  His research interests cover the relationship between citizenship and faith and the limits of the market,  and he is an expert on the work of Karl Polanyi.  Baron Glasman, who sits on the Labour benches in the UK House of Lords, is known for having coined the term Blue Labour, which seeks to revive the concept of the common good in politics and which encourages the political involvement of voluntary groups and a return to community values.

Persons wishing to attend either or both public lectures may reserve a place by emailing [email protected] or phoning 22039510/513.
