New book by Frans Sammut on History of Education in Malta

Sunday, 9 November 2014, 21:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Frans Sammut published at least 26 works during his lifetime. Since his death in 2011, other works have been found by his family and efforts are underway to bring these works posthumously to light.

Among these is the first part of a monograph about the history of education in Malta, entitled Ġrajjet it-Tagħlim f'Malta. It starts from the rule of the Arabs and goes down to the mid-19th century, dealing with education during the Middle Ages and under the Rule of the Knights, French Revolutionary ideas and English conservative approaches.

The book will be launched during the National Book Festival. A discussion will be held among a panel made up of Education Minister Evarist Bartolo, Professor Joseph M. Brincat (who has written about the history of the Maltese language), Professor Raymond Mangion (who teaches history of law), H.E. Dr Ugo Mifsud Bonnici (a former Education Minister who has written about the law of education), MEP Dr Alfred Sant (in his capacity of thinker and writer) and Dr Charles Xuereb (who has specialised in the study of the cultural impact of the French occupation of 1798-1800).

Ġrajjet it-Tagħlim f'Malta is not so much an enumeration of measures taken by public authorities over the centuries, or school statistics, or other such administrative matters and considerations. It is instead a long-term history of education in Malta from the point of view of mentalities, or the psychology, of the epochs under study. It analyses the prevailing attitude in each historical period toward the education of the people.

The book is of interest to those interested in Maltese political and social history and the history of the Maltese language, in education, and in Mikiel Anton Vassalli. Indeed Vassalli features prominently in the book, occupying an entire chapter. Given that this is the 250th anniversary of his birth, it is befitting that this book is being published this year.

The launch will take place on Friday, 14 November at 6.15pm in the Sir Temi Zammit Hall at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Valletta. Soprano Joan Mangion will sing an aria (lyrics by Frans Sammut, music composed for the event by Mro Ray Sciberras) and there will be a small reception. The event is sponsored by APS Bank, AX Foundation and The Farsons Foundation. The book will be for sale at a discounted price.
