Government refusing to answer questions on apparent soft treatment of Enemalta employee - PN

The Nationalist Party has criticised three government ministers for not answering questions about the apparent soft treatment of an Enemalta employee - Louis Attard - after yesterday claiming that he was wrongly treated like any other Enemalta consumer.

In a press conference yesterday, PN Deputy Leader Beppe Fenech Adami and Home Affairs spokesman Jason Azzopardi referred to the recent arraignment of fourteen men - including Louis Attard - who were charged with complicity, corruption and theft of electricity after their failed to regularise their position with the utilities corporation. The arraignments were part of the investigation into the tampering of smart meters.

The PN MPs insisted that it was wrong to treat Mr Attard as any other consumer. As Enemalta's Head of Accounts, he should have also been accused of an aggravated crime but, for some reason, he was not.

Beppe Fenech Adami and Jason Azzopardi insisted yesterday that Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi, Home Affairs Minister Manuel Mallia and Justice Minister Owen Bonnici have to explain why the extra charge was not issued. The PN wants to know who took the decision not to charge Mr Attard with an aggravated crime and who had put pressure on the prosecutors.

They noted, however, that only Manuel Mallia had reacted - he denied being involved and insisted that he does not interfere in police work - placing the responsibility on Owen Bonnici and Konrad Mizzi, who have chosen to remain silent.

The two PN MPs said it is clear that in the best case scenario this is a case of incompetence and in the worst, a case of political interference.
