Latest Eden SuperBowl upgrade provides full disabled access

Wednesday, 12 November 2014, 18:24 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Eden SuperBowl, operated by the Eden Leisure Group, St. Julian's has extended the upgrade of its operations, by installing brand new equipment and facilities to make the whole centre accessible to persons with disabilities, and wheelchair users in particular.

The SuperBowl directors began discussions and consultations with the National Commission for Persons with Disability (KNPD) early in 2014, in order to find the best solution to facilitate unhindered access for wheelchair users throughout the popular tenpin bowling complex. This has now been achieved by the introduction of low-gradient ramps, allowing easy movement between all areas of the centre which is built on four different levels, modification to the bowling lane furniture, which allows easier wheelchair access to the playing area, and perhaps most significantly, the installation of a fully automated, client-controlled stair lift at the SuperBowl's main entrance.

Speaking about Eden Leisure's latest initiative, Director of Operations Mr. Simon De Cesare said, 'During the 26 years since the SuperBowl doors first opened, various upgrades have been invested in to refresh and upgrade our facilities, however full access was very complicated due to the way the centre was built. Something clearly had to be done however is was not a simple as with a new build.'

'Due to the age of the premises there was actually no legal obligation to carry out these improvements on our part', De Cesare continued, 'but an important moral and social obligation clearly existed. We were aided throughout by KNPD, who provided us with internationally approved guidelines and safety standards, which we applied to the full in the planning and execution of the new installations'.

The most recent upgrading of the SuperBowl started earlier this year with substantial investment in new furniture, flooring, lighting and new paintwork in the bowling area, which Mr. De Cesare describes as, 'Essential when it comes the renewal of our product and brand, and to the level of service we offer our customers, although largely aesthetic in nature. The question of facilitating disabled access is also hugely important, but for very different reasons. Nobody should be barred entry to any establishment due to a physical disability in this day and age, and the onus is on us as operators, to eliminate any potential obstacle'.
