Brass House Unit in concert

Tuesday, 9 December 2014, 13:30 Last update: about 13 years ago

The Brass House Unit was founded by Kevin Abela in March of 2013. The band started off as a nine-piece set-up and now functions as a 13-member band. Brass House Unit is a perfect fusion of experienced musicians as well as fresh and upcoming talent. Even though it is still in its early years the band has been relatively busy with weddings and has already been appointed by renowned companies such as HP International and the Malta Dance Sport Association to play at their events.

Band leader, Kevin Abela (principal trumpet - Malta Philharmonic Orchestra) has worked as a musical director and arranger on some of Malta's most popular music events such as the Joseph Calleja summer concerts in Malta, Masquerade Theatre Company's productions for the past five years and most recent Voices - Heart & Soul. His personal achievements have been directing the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra for six editions of the Movie Spectacular and working with world known artists such as Zucchero, Leona Lewis, Ronan Keating, Gigi D'Alessio and Rebecca Ferguson.

On Saturday, 25 October, the Brass House Unit gave a live 90-minute concert at the Sir Temi Zammit Hall at the University of Malta titled Groovy Toons - the journey, which formed part of the Discover University Open Week 2014.

The Brass House Unit, under the direction of trumpeter Kevin Abela, took us on a musical journey from the soul of the 1960s to the groovy sounds of today, with a crossover of artists such as James Brown, Tower Of Power, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and more recent artists like Corona, Zucchero, Bruno Mars, Daft Punk and many others.

The band on the night was made up of Ivan Borg, Mat McKay, Daniel Quattromani and Godfrey Mifsud on saxophone, Kevin Abela, Nathan Abela and Reno Cassar on trumpet, Jonathan Abela, Aurelio Belli and Joseph Borg on trombone, Simon Fenech on piano and keyboards, Jonathan Ellul on acoustic and lead guitar, James Micallef on bass, Melchior Busuttil on drums, Kristian Schembri on percussion and accompanied by singers Gloriana Arpa Belli, Petra Micallef and Sean Borg.

The musical numbers were very carefully chosen to suit all ages, with music dating back to the 1960s up to today's greatest radio hits. A jam-packed Sir Temi Zammit Hall was lit up with disco lights, to make sure the audience got a great feel of the music genre for the evening. There was no doubt that this was a memorable music celebration with the audience singing and clapping throughout the event. Three words to sum up this experience would be - Fun, Exciting, Memorable. Not to be missed the second time around!
