In his Christmas Message (TMIS, 21/12/14), the Prime Minister stated that "another challenge to tackle, is the fact that (illegal) migrants are locked up in detention centres".
This view is also shared by the leader of the opposition.
Detaining migrants who enter the country illegally is the current practice in at least one of our major EU partners, namely the UK and, as far as I know, there is no international pressure on them to change their system. They certainly have no plans to do so,
I would have thought that the major problem facing us is not detention, but preventing entry of these illegal aliens in the first place.
If they do land on our shores they need to be moved on to one or more of the large EU countries which have both the room and the economic strength to accommodate them. We have neither and that fact should be as plain as a pikestaff to our politicians and the NGOs who are pushing for change.
This kind of defeatist talk indicates that both major parties are now trying to soften us up and to prepare us for the inevitable deluge which is going to result from Italy abandoning its search & rescue missions.
We are being prepared for mass integration which will utterly destroy our way of life forever.
If this is what our politicians consider to be serving the people, then, to coin a phrase, 'I'm a banana'.
No wonder more and more voters are turning to the extreme right.
There is only so much the people can take.
