September 2014 round-up: Malta welcomes Prince William as it celebrates 50 years of independence,

Thursday, 1 January 2015, 13:00 Last update: about 10 years ago

A proposal to extend the height of the A&E Department at Mater Dei uncovered the fact that inferior concrete had been used to construct the building and that it actually crumbled away in parts. Porporina also went on hunger strike in prison while ebola reared its ugly head.

September 3: September saw the continuation of the Mater Dei concrete saga, with a third report being published proving that 'inferior concrete' was used in some columns of the A&E ward.

September 8:Animal cruelty was brought to the forefront, when a horse that had apparently been "set on fire by its owner for not winning a race" was just one of six shocking cases of animal cruelty encountered by officers from the Animal Welfare Directorate this year so far. It is also one of the worst cases of animal cruelty reported in Malta to date.

September 10:Convicted criminal Alfred Bugeja -most commonly known as il-Porporina- went on a hunger strike, claiming that he gave a urine sample in hospital which showed he was clean, yet the same test performed in prison showed that he had used heroin, cocaine and cannabis.

September 11:Karmenu Vella was handed the environment, maritime affairs and fisheries portfolio, after a rigorous interview within the European Parliament.

September 14: San Blas saw a campsite complete with artificial turf and a lounge face daily fines after this newsroom had informed MEPA of the case.

September 19:Ebola and migration were two major topics this month. Maltese feared the disease reaching our shores. This later led to an Ebola drill being held in Malta in October. A ship carrying a person suspected of having Ebola had been denied entry into port by Maltese authorities, ending up in Sicily. The man was eventually found not to be carrying the disease.

September 21: Malta marked the 50th anniversary of its independence. In homage, this newsroom published a 50th anniversary supplement. For the celebrations, Prince William paid a visit to Malta, replacing his wife Kate who could not make the trip due to her pregnancy. While here, he gave a small speech and toured a number of spots around the islands.

September 23:Hunting also played an important role, with government wanting stricter hunting regulations and 10 hunters being taken to court over an illegal protest in Valletta following the closure of the hunting season until October 10.  Malta's independent newspapers also formed an unprecedented alliance against spring hunting and in favour of the possible referendum to see this practice abolished. Collective pressure was made to authorities to try and push the referendum through.
