Alleanza Bidla has criticised the Maltese Government, claiming it has meddled in Libyan affairs and by doing so damaged relations between the two countries.
Alleanza Bidla's Ivan Grech Mintoff said that while the government has been stating that it is following the international line and recognising the Tobruk Government, "the EU has already refused a Tobruk ambassador". Mr Grech Mintoff said that Alleanza Bidla recognizes the Tripoli government.
"The Tripoli Charge d'Affaires is not an ambassador, and as such cannot be refused by our government. In addition, the government released a letter saying that it no longer recognised him. This has never been done in Maltese history and the government has no right to say that Malta no longer recognises someone as a Charge d'Affaires. By picking sides, Malta has meddled in Libyan affairs".
Mr Grech Mintoff also claims that "the Italian government not only refused an ambassador fromTobruk, but made him leave the country. In addition, Italy already has an embassy in Libya and Germany and the UK are in the process of re-opening negotiations," he claimed.
"We want peace and stability as quickly as possible in the region. There are hundreds of Maltese who work in Libya and money has been invested there. We must not forget that Libya was one of the countries that guaranteed Maltese neutrality. Other countries in the EU are recognising the Tripoli government. It is the executive government of Libya chosen by the people and through a decision of the Genreral National Council. The Tripoli Government controls the ports, visas, the ministries etc".
Malta is currently housing two Charge d'Affaires, the Charge d'Affaires from the Tobruk Government currently housed in Ta'Xbiex, and one representing the Tripoli Government in Attard.
Both sides are vying for power in Libya, with the Tripoli Government holding the majority of the country.
