Tuesday, 3 March 2015, 09:16 Last update: about 11 years ago

On Tuesday 17 March at 7pm, Flimkien għal-Ambjent Aħjar (FAA) will be holding a talk on "Maltese Balconies: Origins and Evolution" at the Corinthia Palace Hotel, Attard, which will be presented by Adrian Strickland.

During this lecture, the audience will discover various fascinating facts about how the styles and construction of Maltese balconies evolved through the ages, as well as the origins of word "Gallarija" itself.

A former TV news cameraman, a territorial soldier and ambassador for Malta in the Netherlands, Adrian Strickland has been researching and documenting Maltese balconies for decades. His talk will feature a 40-year collection of photos illustrating the range and contrasting architectural styles of local balconies, old and new, as well as some surprising modern balcony designs from elsewhere in Europe.

He will also be exploring the changes in usage of balconies from their early fortification function to becoming an essential part of everyday life for our grandparents, the changes in modern balcony usage due to increasing popularity of new technology and what the future holds for Maltese balconies.

To reserve a place at this intriguing lecture please go to: https://ticketengine.faa.org.mt/ or www.faa.org.mt . If in difficulty please phone 21310720 during office hours.

A €5 donation towards FAA's art restoration project is kindly solicited.
