Wednesday, 11 March 2015, 11:10 Last update: about 11 years ago

A bus driver - Thomas Spagnol of Zejtun - today was imprisoned for two months and had his licence suspended for three months after being found guilty of driving in a negligent and dangerous manner, using a cellular phone while driving, ignoring traffic signs and disturbing public peace.

The driver was employed by Schillaci Garage.

The incident happened in Mosta on 9 July 2014 at 9am. It all started when a cyclist, Graham Borg, was cycling towards Burmarrad. A bus – driven by the accused – was going in the same direction from Rabat. At one point, the cyclist had a near miss with the bus. When the cyclist realised what had just happened, he cycled towards the bus and reached it. When the cyclist approached the bus and was about to tell the driver to be more cautious, the bus driver reacted by attempting to run over the cyclist, narrowly missing him once again.

Lawyer Victor Bugeja appeared for the accused. Magistrate Francesco Depasquale presided over the case.
