BERLIN — U.S. Col. Roland Lajoie had just arrived home in West Berlin on a cool March day in 1985 when he got the call from his headquarters: the Soviets were demanding to see him immediately in East Germany. As chief of the U.S. Military Liaison Mission, Lajoie regularly sent intelligence-gathering patrols into communist East Germany and confrontations were not unusual. MOSCOW — Russia officials say they will resume space tourism in 2018 after years of sending into space only professional cosmonauts and astronauts. Russia had sent seven paying guests to the International Space Station since 2001 before curtailing the program in 2009.

SUPER SALAMANDER

LONDON — Researchers have found fossil remains of a previously unknown species of crocodile-like "super salamander" that roamed the Earth more than 200 million years ago. University of Edinburgh researchers say the species discovered in Portugal was among the Earth's top predators.

BIALYSTOK, Poland — Hundreds of residents have turned out in eastern Poland for a meeting with a convoy of U.S. troops that is driving through eastern Europe, a region concerned that the armed conflict in Ukraine threatens its security.

UEFA-BLATTER

VIENNA — FIFA President Sepp Blatter hit out at unnamed lawmakers for wanting boycotts of the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the 2022 event in Qatar. "Football should be united, sport should be united when it comes to boycotts," Blatter said at the UEFA congress on Tuesday. "Boycotts have never had any results."
