Migration discussions should centre on how the burden is going to be shared - MEP Miriam Dalli

Wednesday, 20 May 2015, 11:47 Last update: about 12 years ago

Labour MEP Miriam Dalli today said that certain EU countries seem willing to let Malta, Italy and Greece bear the brunt of the irregular migration crisis.

Dr Dalli was referring to statements by certain European leaders saying that they are not willing to accept mandatory relocation and resettlement quotas.

In a statement, Dr Dalli said such declarations show that certain countries are comfortable doing nothing about the crisis.

She said the stance taken by these leaders show there is no real will to tackle the problem.

While welcome the European Commission’s proposals on migration, she said words must translate into action. If no revision of the Dublin Regulation will be carried out, we will be allowing those who do not live up to their responsibilities, to continue to do so," she concluded.
