U.S. stocks eased as a jump in bond yields hit utilities and other top dividend payers, but energy gains and optimism that Greece is near a deal with creditors limited losses. The S&P utility index declined, leading losses among S&P sectors, after U.S. long-dated Treasury debt yields rose to two-week highs.

The Treasury on Tuesday accepted Euro 5.00 million in 91-day Treasury Bills at an average yield of -0.005 percent.  Outstanding Treasury Bills amount to Euro 192,050,000 - a decrease of Euro 12 million from the previous week.

Consumers emboldened by easy-to-get loans and cheap gas pushed U.S. auto sales in May to their strongest pace in a decade, countering weakness in other economic indicators. U.S. May auto sales hit 17.79 million last month on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis, the highest since summer 2005.

Greece's creditors drafted the broad lines of an agreement to put to the leftist government in Athens in a bid to conclude four months of acrimonious negotiations and release aid before the cash-strapped country runs out of money. The joint effort by the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund to set out the terms for a cash-for-reforms deal came after the leaders of Germany and France held emergency talks with those institutions in Berlin on Monday night to press the lenders to bridge their own differences and find a solution.
