GREECE-BAILOUT

ATHENS, Greece — Greece remains at loggerheads with its creditors over key economic reforms after a meeting between Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the head of the European Union's executive arm failed to yield a breakthrough on the release of vital bailout loansWith time running out, there are real fears that Athens won't secure a deal that will see it get remaining bailout funds to avoid going bankrupt. 

TURKEY-ELECTIONS

ANKARA, Turkey — Assailants fire on a campaign vehicle belonging to Turkey's pro-Kurdish party and kill its driver, in the latest violence against politicians or political parties ahead of Sunday's general election. 

BOSNIA-POPE'S VISIT

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina — For centuries, Sarajevo was known as "Europe's Jerusalem," where Christianity, Islam and Judaism lived in harmony. In the 1990s, the city became synonymous with religious enmity, as its Christian Orthodox Serbs and Muslim Bosniaks plunged into a calamitous cycle of warfare. Pope Francis hopes to restore some of the earlier legacy Saturday during his visit to the city. 

UKRAINE

KIEV, Ukraine — Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko warns of a possible large-scale offensive by separatist forces in the east, one day after a major battle erupted on the western edge of the main separatist rebel stronghold, leaving more than a dozen dead. 

IRAN-NUCLEAR TALKS

VIENNA — Iran and six world powers on Thursday were approaching the final stretch in marathon talks aimed at restricting the country's nuclear programs in exchange for sanctions relief. The sides are aiming to have a deal by June 30. 

IRAQ AID

BRUSSELS — The United Nations is appealing for almost half a billion dollars in urgent aid to provide humanitarian assistance for more than 8 million people in Iraq. Lise Grande, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Iraq, said Thursday that "more than 50 percent of the operation will be shut down or cut back if money is not received immediately." 

EUROPE-MIGRANTS

BRUSSELS — The U.N. refugee agency is urging the European Union to take in far greater numbers of refugees than planned as the number of desperate Syrians fleeing conflict continues to grow. The EU's 28 nations resettled only around 8,500 people in need of protection last year, according to UNHCR figures, and plans to resettle 20,000 refugees from outside Europe over the next two years.
