Matthew Asciak won Malta’s third medal in tennis, by placing third in the men’s singles event. He managed to reach the final with two convincing victories, yet his advance was stopped short by Laurent Recunderc of Andorra.

Asciak managed a comfortable lead at the start of the match winning 4-1, however his opponent turned the match around and lost the first 8-6 on tie-break.

Recunderc had to work less hard in the second set, which he won comfortably 6-1.

He will now contest the gold medal against Ugo Nastasi from Luxembourg.

This brings to a close the Maltese Tennis players’ adventure in Reykjavik, who are bringing home three bronze medals: one for the duo Elaine Genovese-Katrina Sammut in women’s doubles, one for Genovese in women’s singles, and Asciak’s in men’s singles.

Meanwhile, two Maltese athletes are in the quarterfinals of the table tennis women’s singles event.

Victoria Lucenkova placed first in her group with two victories over athletes from Iceland and Montenegro, and Jessica Pace placed second with one victory and one defeat.
