On 2 June, the Italian Embassy in Malta held the traditional celebration of Italy's National Day. The event was honoured by the presence of the President of Malta Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and of the Archbishop Charles J. Scicluna. The guests included members of the Government and the Opposition as well as academics, entrepreneurs and members of the Diplomatic Corps. Italian Senator Laura Bianconi was also present for the occasion.

In his speech, Ambassador Giovanni Umberto De Vito highlighted the close ties between Italy and Malta and the intense and fruitful collaboration between both governments, especially in the areas of migration and energy. During this year's celebration of Italy's National Day, special prominence was given to the efforts by the Italian Navy and Coast Guard to rescue migrants in the Mediterranean Sea.

The opportunity to visit Milano Expo 2015, currently being held in Milan, was emphasised during the evening and guests were able to taste food specialities and wine from various regions offered by Italian companies based in Malta.

A water and lights display in Marsamxett Harbour to the accompaniment of famous arias from Italian opera was the highlight of the evening.
