Reference is made to Simon Oosterman's letter entitled "Trees, money and competence" (TMIS, 31 May).

The pruning of trees being carried out is a continuation of a pruning exercise which was started last year. The council would like to point out that in fact it took professional advice from their expert contractor and listened to the needs of the community and not of a particular individual prior to taking a decision.

The pruning of all the trees in question is covered by a Mepa permit which allows for seasonal pruning. ELC acted professionally and in accordance with existing permits. Healthy pruning invigorates the tree, while damaged and diseased branches are removed to help prevent insect and decay organisms from entering the tree.

The pruning in question involved the cutting of dead branches, most of which were windburnt. Pictures attached attest to this. Kindly note the cut branches and the absence of greenery.

The council feels that it was unfair of Mr Oosterman to compare trees of different sizes before and after pruning, giving the impression of a healthy mature tree being reduced to a few twigs and branches.
