A 48-year-old man was today granted bail after being charged with intentionally damaging a vehicle and giving false statement.

Inspector Robert Said Sarreo explained that on the evening of 8 May 2015, George Degabriele visited the Labour Club in Marsascala, where he met Jason Genovese, who used to date his niece.

The police inspector said that Mr Genovese offered a beer to Mr Degabriele but the two started arguing about a money loan. It was then that the accused stormed out of the club, got into his car and reversed into Mr Genovese's vehicle, a BMW. The vehicle was damaged so extensively that it can't be used.

From there, he made his way to the police station and reported that he might have hit a vehicle by accident.

Mr Degabriele was granted bail against a personal guarantee of  € 10,000.

The accused explained to the magistrate that he has a disability and asked if he can do community work instead of signing the bail book, out of fear of forgetting, however the magistrate refused the request.

Magistrate Fransceso Depasquele presided.
