Policy document on how to handle transgender, inter-sex children in schools launched

The Education and Civil Liberties Ministries have issued guidelines on how state schools can best handle transgender and intersex children.

Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli said they came across one case where a transgender female was applying for jobs, and her education certificates still showed a male name.

The Ministry helped her rectify this problem, she said.

Education Minister Evarist Bartolo said every child deserves to be given the necessary dignity and space to develop in schools.

Civil rights are an important part of the education triangle, Mr Bartolo said.

He said “the hard work starts now” and requires a change in attitudes.

Malta Gay Rights Movement coordinator Gabi Calleja said the policy document offers practical advice to school, and each school can implement the advice to suit their own environments.

She said the policy document is responding to real world situations.
