Saviour Attard – the father-in-law of Marco Gaffarena - today filed a libel suit against MaltaToday over an article published on Wednesday titled ‘Gaffarena: A tale of illegalities’.
Mr Gaffarena is the person who is at the centre of the Old Mint Street Valletta property expropriation deal controversy. Mr Attard is arguing that MaltaToday carried a photo of him with the aim of tarnishing his reputation.
On Wednesday, MaltaToday’s mid-week edition published a photo of Mr Attard along with a caption which mistakenly read ‘Joe Gafferena’, who happens to be the father of Marco Gaffarena.
This morning, MaltaToday published a clarification with the online story apologising for the mistake which read: ‘In the printed version of the MaltaToday Wednesday edition, the photograph of a certain Saviour Attard accompanied this article, instead of that of Joe Gaffarena. The technical error is regretted’.
Mr Attard is demanding the newspaper pays him €11,646 in damages. The libel suit was filed by Mr Attard’s lawyer Dr John Bonello.
