CHARLESTON SHOOTING

CHARLESTON, South Carolina — A white man who joined a prayer meeting inside a historic black church and then fatally shot nine people was captured without resistance after an all-night manhunt, police said.

PRESIDENTIAL RACE-SANDERS

INDIANOLA, IOWA — 2016 Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders doesn't take the stage to a blaring soundtrack. He doesn't have a teleprompter or a phalanx of Secret Service agents surrounding him. But when his New York accent booms out at a campaign stop in rural Iowa, heads nod along in approval.

ESCAPED PRISONERS-ON THE LOOSE

NEW YORK — As an intense manhunt focuses on two escaped New York convicts, The Associated Press found that at least 150 state prison escapees nationwide have never been caught. Many have been gone so long that authorities have scant prospects of finding them, if they're even alive.

MARINE RAIDERS

CAMP LEJEUNE, North Carolina — The Army has its Green Berets, and the Navy has the SEALs. Now, an elite branch of the U.S. Marine Corps will officially be known as Raiders in a move resurrecting a name used by World War II units that carried out risky amphibious and guerrilla operations.

DOMINICAN REPUBLIC-MIGRANTS' PLIGHT

FONBAYA, Haiti — Human rights activists fear the crackdown on migrants in the neighboring Dominican Republic will soon send a flood of uprooted people into this deeply poor country that tens of thousands fled because they couldn't make a living.

CUBA-POET'S JOURNEY

EL ESPARTACO, Cuba — Richard Blanco, the United States' only Latino inaugural poet, returns to his parent's native land for his first visit in years, as part of an effort to accompany the warming of diplomatic and economic ties with emotional reconciliation through art and literature.

MEXICO-DEPORTER-IN-CHIEF

MEXICO CITY — Mexico now deports more Central American migrants than the United States, a dramatic shift since the U.S. asked Mexico for help a year ago with a spike in illegal migration, especially among unaccompanied minors.
