Welsh woman with Maltese surname in Tunisia safe, ‘venom-spreading’ mosques to close

Saturday, 27 June 2015, 10:41 Last update: about 11 years ago

A 25-year-old Welsh woman with a Maltese surname is safe and sound after having earlier been feared missing and among the victims of yesterday's beach massacre.

Her cousin, Chris Spiteri, 29, from Cardiff, told the BBC he was deeply worried about his 25-year-old cousin Lena Tanti, also from Cardiff, who is currently in Tunisia.

"She's on holiday with her friend and I've tried calling her but her phone is dead," he said. "I've WhatsApped her but I haven't heard back.

"I don't know what hotel or anything she's staying in but I'm really worried and I just want to know she's OK."

He later told the Telegraph: “I have spoken to her this morning and she’s fine and that’s all I care about.”

Tourists leaving country

In the meantime, busloads of tourists are heading to the nearby Enfidha-Hammamet airport hoping to return to their home countries. The attack in the Tunisian resort of Sousse was the worst ever in the country and came just months after the March 18 massacre at the national Bardo museum in Tunis that left 22 people dead, again mostly tourists. It is expected to deal a heavy blow to the country's tourism industry, which accounts for nearly 15 percent if Tunisia's gross domestic product.

British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond has said a high proportion of the casualties is likely to be British and U.K. tour operator Thomas Cook was among the travel agents that started evacuating its customers from Tunisia Saturday. It said on Twitter it has arranged an additional plane to depart from Tunisia to fly home anyone wishing to leave.

'Venom-spreading' mosques to close

At a news conference at his office in the capital Tunis, Prime Minister Habib Essid said 80 mosques accused of "spreading venom" will close within a week. He said he would immediately close mosques outside the control of the ministry of religious affairs and call army reservists into active service and place them around the country. "No mosque that does not confirm to the law will be tolerated," he said, referring to those that incite to terrorism.
