Tuesday, 14 July 2015, 11:52 Last update: about 10 years ago

Archbishop Square in Mdina is set to come to life on Friday 24th July when soloists from the Bavarian State Ballet of Munich and the National Theatre of Prague will be performing Romeo and Juliet.  Malta Art Events together with the Mdina Local Council and the sponsorship of Frank Salt, will be presenting a ballet spectacular featuring Prokofiev's famous ballet.  Sergei Prokofiev (1891-1953) composed what became his most famous ballet in 1936. He revised it in 1940 and it is this version which is commonly performed. It is one of the greatest ballets of the 20th century based as it is on an immortal work popularised by William Shakespeare's tragedy of the same name.

Whether on stage or screen, this tragic story has never ceased to move audiences all over the world. Many famous choreographers have created productions of it. Vincenzo Bellini and Charles Gounod wrote operas on the subject and Pyotr Tchaikovsky based one of his most famous works on it. Famous film directors like Franco Zeffirelli won acclaim with his screen version and Leonard Bernstein composed his modern day version of the tale in his West Side Story.

Mdina, our old capital city provides a unique backdrop for a spectacular evening of ballet under the stars. The space has been made available courtesy of the Mdina Local Council and with special thanks to Mayor Peter Sant Manduca. Malta Art Events continues in a tradition that since 2011 has brought high quality performances of classical music and opera events as well as ballet and lighter music to local audiences.

This is an evening under the stars for ballet lovers and cultural enthusiasts alike, not to be missed.
