A 22-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman were hurt when the car they were in fell into the sea early this morning, the police said today.

The accident happened last night, at about 12.45am, in the area known as Il-Magħluq in Marsaxlokk.

It was established that the vehicle, a Renault Clio which was eventually found upside down in the sea, was being driven by the man, who lives in Żabbar. The woman was a passenger.

Fortunately, the two managed to exit the car shortly after it fell off the quay. They were conveyed by ambulance to Mater Dei Hospital, where the man was found to have sustained slight injuries and the woman grievous injuries.

A boat in the vicinity was also damaged in the incident.

Investigations are underway by the Marsaxlokk District Police.
