A French tourist who was hit by a car in Gzira last week ended up in court today charged with being in possession of 40 grams of cannabis at the time of the accident.

Alexis Medhy Robin Meyret, a 25-year-old Frenchman living in Gzira, denied possession of the drug found in circumstances indicating it was not for his personal use.

A court heard how the man was crossing the street when he was hit by a car.

He was certified to have suffered a fractured leg, and while police were investigating they found the bag containing the drugs.

He appeared before Magistrate Marseann Farrugia on crutches.

The man was granted bail against a deposit of €2,500 and a personal guarantee of €10,000.

Inspector Jonathan Ransley prosecuted and lawyer Mario de Marco appeared for the accused.
