The Malta Police Association today questioned why not all members of the Rapid Intervention Unit have been given new service trousers.

In a statement, the MPA said the RIU is not merely made up of the 32 members forming part of the SWAT team. A further 110 members form part of the RIU, and these have not been given new trousers.

It questioned whether members are seen at being “children of a lesser God?”

The MPA said it hopes this is not the case, pointing out that the difference in treatment is creating unnecessary tension.

The Association said it is embarrassing that RIU members have to go on patrol in torn trousers.

The MPA said it is also shameful that some police stations are not even equipped with air conditioning.

The Association has also raised the issue of police station on fixed point duties. It says these officers are not being offered adequate shelter from the hot son.

In yet another grip, the association said the third district, which is made up of Rahal Gdid, Fgura, Santa Lucija and parts of Mosta and Tarxien, is only covered by one squad car.
