Unleaded petrol prices in Malta lie just below the European Union average, according to statistics found on Europe’s energy portal website, while diesel prices are well above.
In Malta, unleaded fuel is sold at a retail price of €1.35 per litre, while the European average stands at €1.36. The country with the lowest retail price is Poland, whose citizens spend just €1.12 per litre. On the other end of the spectrum, Italians pay €1.68 per litre. 14 EU countries pay less for unleaded and 13 pay more.
As for diesel, Maltese citizens pay well above the average retail price. The EU average stands at €1.19 per litre, according to the website and Maltese pay €1.28 per litre, with the United Kingdom, Sweden, Italy, Ireland, Finland and Denmark paying higher prices.
Last February, the PN ran a campaign against government to reduce fuel prices, which back then were among the highest in Europe. Government then later announced a €0.03 reduction that resulted in today’s prices.
The price of unleaded petrol and Diesel (pre-tax), however, remains one of the highest in Europe. The average Europeans spend on a litre of unleaded petrol without tax stands at €0.57, yet the Maltese price is €0.62. As for diesel, the average is €0.54 and the Maltese price is €0.64.
