An Italian man has been jailed for 25 months after admitting to stealing some €4,000 from his workplace.

The court heard how the man, who works at Country Style in Birzebbuga, was tasked with locking up the shop at closing time. He left the windows open and returned at around 3.30am and stole the cash.

Gian Nicola Cursoli, 42, told Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera he was sorry for what he had done. He said he needed the money to pay rent for his Birzebbuga apartment. Mr Cursoli admitted the charges and was jailed for 25 months in jail.

Police Inspector Kurt Zahra prosecuted. Lawyer Mark Busuttil appeared for the man.
