A Magistrate today ordered the immediate release of a man who shouted at police officers for not taking any action against a Paceville bouncer who beat up a young man.

Justin James Caffrey, the CEO of a Malta-based financial services company was walking through St George’s Road in Paceville at 5am this morning when he saw the young man being beaten up by a bouncer.

He called the police but when the two officers arrived they did nothing except to say that an ambulance was on the way.

Mr Caffrey’s lawyer, Giannella de Marco and George Hyzler, said their client was shocked that the officers did nothing. Mr Caffrey, who was holding the young man and got covered in his blood, was tapping on the officers’ shoulders asking them to do something about the incident.

Disgusted by their lack of action, Mr Caffrey, and Irishman, called the officers ‘fu***** b******s” as the ambulance drove off. At this point the policemen pinned him to the ground and arrested him.

This afternoon he was arraigned under arrest, charged with reviling the police, resisting them, breaching the peace, disobeying orders, being drunk and saying obscenities.

Inspector Trevor Micallef, prosecuting, said the accused had interfered in police duties by telling them “what they should and should not do.” At one point he told them he was a judge, the inspector claimed. The youth who was beaten up, Francesco Coppola, was released from hospital after receiving treatment for slight injuries.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera said Mr Caffrey’s arrest was not justified. She ordered his immediate release.  

But Magistrate Scerri Herrera saw no justification for the arrest and ordered his immediate release. She instructed the man to inform the inspector with the dates when he will be in Malta to face the charges brought against him. The Magistrate also ordered that the youth be brought to court for the next sitting, along with the four police officers who were involved.
