A crowd of around a 100 gathered in Ta'Xbiex yesterday evening to take part in the ice bucket challenge, organised by ALS Malta.

Xarabank presenter Peppi Azzopardi was present and the event began with two construction vehicles upturning water onto participants, followed by others taking the traditional challenge.

Gaming consultant Bjorn Formosa, founder of ALS Malta, organised this "ice bucket challenge" in order to raise awareness and raise funds for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) research in Malta.

ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord.

Mr Formosa was himself, recently diagnosed with ALS and speaking with this newsroom earlier this week, he said that there is currently no cure for ALS and that it would take many years to find one, adding that currently there is only one medication which slows progression by a maximum of three months.

The event also saw singers Roger Tirazona and Jessica Muscat in attendance.
