Professional opera singer Ambro? Bajec-Lapajne was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which required an awake craniotomy to remove it.
To ensure Ambro?’s cognitive functions were working properly he was encouraged to talk throughout the surgery, and was even asked to sing while surgeons were working on his exposed brain.
This wasn’t just for a bit of music accompaniment to the operation – the neuro-surgery team in Utrecht, Holland asked him to sing along to Franz Schubert’s ‘Gute Nacht’ in two different keys (major and minor) to see if he could still notice the difference.
Despite having someone fiddling about with his brain, Ambro? talent shines through as his majestic voice fills the operating theatre.
The operation was carried out last year, but the video about the surgery was uploaded online a few days ago.
Ambro? said: ‘It’s been more than a year since and I’m doing fine, continuing my professional singing career.’
