Labour MP Marlene Farrugia today describes the anxious moments she and her partner Godfrey Farrugia had when the Labour Party whip was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

Writing in The Malta Independent today, Marlene Farrugia speaks about how the news was broken “in the gentlest most professional way” and how the couple dealt and will be dealing with this moment of crisis. (Full article here)

For his part, Godfrey Farrugia, a doctor by profession, said that when he saw the results of his blood tests he immediately realised that something was wrong and sought advice from a consultant.

The diagnosis showed that the 55-year-old MP had prostate cancer, news which he made public via his Facebook page on Saturday evening after he had informed his relatives.

He said that he has accepted his condition and will be fighting tooth and nail to overcome it. He said he got to know through screening and not via symptoms. He admitted that the situation is serious but is not afraid of the ordeal of fighting it out.

“I can understand the plight of patients better now,” he admitted.

Dr Farrugia is expected to be discharged from Mater Dei Hospital on Tuesday and he will then have to wait for his slot in the United Kingdom to undergo major surgery to remove his prostate.

He is expected to remain in hospital for 10 days.
