A 60-year-old Spanish sailor was brought to safety early this morning, following the intervention of the Armed Forces of Malta’s Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC).
An AFM spokesperson said the man was alone on his motor vessel when its engines developed a fault and stopped working some 100 miles off Malta's coast. The man was later picked up by a merchant vessel, the Maersk Pittsburgh, which brought him close to Malta's shores.
The AFM's Melita rescue launch was dispatched to bring the man back to Malta.
The Spaniard who was transferred to the Maritime Squadron's Haywharf base, was found to be in good health and did not require medical assistance. He was welcomed by the Spanish Ambassador to Malta, José Pons.
