The migration crisis in Europe has reached proportions that the world has not seen since the end of WWII. Since 2008, more than 750,000 people have been granted protection within the EU. Last year 185,000 people were granted protection, a 50% increase over the previous year. This year Europe is predicting that the figure could reach 1 million people, largely driven by the exodus from Syria. Germany accepted the highest number of asylum applications in 2014 with 57,555. But per capita, it was Sweden and Malta who accepted the most applications with 355 and 306 per 100,000 inhabitants respectively. Michael Carabott crunches the numbers and puts it into an infographic
