A 26-year-old woman has been acquitted of seriously injuring a woman in an accident that took place in June 2012.

A court had heard how Romina Fava had parked her car temporarily in Main Street, Zabbar and hit the woman as she was reversing to exit the parking spot. The victim, Carmela Buhagiar, had just come out of Triq il-Biccieni - a narrow road – to cross the street.

Ms Fava and her partner gave Ms Buhagiar first aid and remained with her until she was taken to hospital.

The woman had suffered a fracture of her right hip and her right shoulder, as a result of which she became dependent on her daughter for housekeeping, shopping and bathing. The woman was also no longer able to go walk outdoors. Her mobility was affected so much that she also needed a wheelchair to get round her house, although she could use a Zimmer frame to walk short distances.

The police were not informed of the accident by the driver filed a report two days later after she was advised to do so by her father.

The woman had told the police that she had not seen the driver in the car.

Magistrate Joseph Mifsud ruled that the prosecution had not brought enough proof for the court to assign blame and therefore acquitted Ms Fava.
